My Creative Space: Gotta Get It

It's been a gray, rainy week here in Des Moines, one better suited to October than the middle of May.  Since pounding rain and chilly temperatures don't lend themselves to outdoor pursuits, the coop has been neglected in favor of drier activities.  (Shh...don't tell the chickens!)

As soon as I saw the copper heart bookmarks at Lost Button Studio, I knew there was 20 gauge copper wire and a hammer in my immediate future.  What I hadn't counted on, though, was the mess that results from whacking said wire with a mallet on the concrete floor of the garage.  Not the smooth and shiny results I was after, let me tell you.  After a brief Google session, I was able to determine that what I really needed was a bench block.  I've been known talk my way out of buying wholewheat couscous because it's too spendy, people, but that stalwart  frugality turned tail and ran while the nice lady in the bead shop rang up my twenty-dollar chunk of polished steel.  And it's a good thing, too, or I'd never have made it out of there with the sterling silver bails I needed for my POD.  (Project on Deck)  So, Google was right, my money was well-spent, and look at all the pretties!

  1. They look awesome! And I'm the same...can be a stinge at times when it's something practical and needed...but if it's frivolous I don't seem to even look at the price tag. Hope the weather clears up so you can lay your chicken coop project to rest :)

  4. They are very cool!At lease you can justify that steel block by telling everyone it was a darn sight cheaper than a new concrete floor!

  5. Steel block? What is this thing I am only just hearing about, many kinked wire efforts later? Your hearts look so pretty, please do tell how you did it? Or perhaps I should follow your lead and Google it...

  7. This is what I ended up with: http://www.amazon.com/Steel-Bench-Block-Anvil-Jewelers/dp/B000RAZR0G

I'm very happy with it, although I have a hunch I could've found something less pricey if I hadn't been such a spaz...

  8. Hi Wendy. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog. Your 5 year old does sound like she is quite enthusiastic about the reversible dress! The pattern is a vintage one that I picked up in a garage sale. It's Butterick 6875 Childrens Wrap and Go Jumper. Unfortunately they aren't multi size patterns and I was very lucky to find a size 6 one. You might find one on Trade Me if you trawl. I'll do a post about it soon and do a drawing of the pattern pieces as I think it would probably be fairly easy to replicate.

Thanks for taking the time to comment...it makes me feel a little less like I'm talking to myself again.
